Infancy & Toddlerhood
Birth to 2 years old
"Dramatic changes in the body and brain support the emergence of a wide array of motor, perceptual, and intellectual capacities and first imitate ties to others" (Berk, 2013, p. 6).
Upon discussion with my mother, I've learned that much of my development in infancy and toddlerhood feel within normal development. There were no hindrances nor huge leaps/ outliers in my physical, cognitive and emotional development
Birthday: September 1, 1988 (1 day past my due date)
Delivery/Labor: Lasted approximately 12 hours and was born via natural childbirth.
Birth Complications: I was born with fluid in my lungs and had a heart murmur. I was held in ICU for approximately 4-5 days. Even with the birth complications, my mother was able to hold me immediately after birth. I was not breastfed until my 3rd day in ICU and did not have a lot of contact with my mother before then. My father and grandparents stayed with my when I was in ICU and my mother returned to work.
Breastfed: Until Christmas of 1988 (approximately 3 months). My mother was working full-time and returned to work immediately after giving birth so breastfeeding was difficult.
Complicating Factors: My mother was considered an elderly primigravida. I was my mothers first full-term pregnancy (she had 1 miscarriage) and she was 37 years old when I was born. Although my mother's pregnancy was considered high-risk, she did not experience any issues during pregnancy. My mother had an amniocentesis during the pregnancy due to her age.
