Teaching
Upon acceptance into the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at the University of Toledo, I have decided that I want to pursue my PhD in counseling. Although being a faculty member puts a large emphasis on research, the teaching component is also important for receiving tenure. I have no experience teaching, and very little experience with public speaking and presenting; both of which I believe are important to being a successful instructor. I recognized that having content knowledge in the area I wish to teach not alone makes me a successful teacher, so it will be important for me to find ways to improve my teaching knowledge before I receive my PhD. Not only will improving my knowledge of teaching help me later, it will also help my presenting and oral skills.
Teaching: Development Plan
To improve my teaching knowledge, during my first year I plan to collect syllabi from courses related to teaching such as Maureen’s syllabus for college teaching as well as syllabi for courses that I hope to teach (counseling syllabi etc). I also plan to read McKeachie’s Teaching Tips: Strategies, Research, and Theory for College and University Teachers (Svinicki & McKeachie, 2011) as well as Student Affairs Staff as Teachers: New Directions for Student Services to help me gain a broader knowledge of teacher strategies. Lastly I will seek opportunities to present either in class, at conferences, or through applying for a position in the National Counseling Honor’s Society (Chi Sigma Iota) to gain more experience speaking in front of others. During my second year I plan to seek opportunities to shadow and interview instructors who have been spoken of positively or teach courses that are of interest to me. Additionally I hope to discuss more in depth teaching strategies and lesson planning that my partner uses when teaching high school students. Lastly I plan to speak with my academic advisor about what strategies he would recommend to help improve my teaching skills as well as enroll in an education or teaching course elective. During my third year, I will hopefully be beginning my PhD program, and have received an assistantship (which is typically teaching an undergraduate course in counseling). To continue to expand my knowledge in teaching I plan to teach an undergraduate course, and continue my research in education through webinars, course readings, and discussions. Moreover, I wish to assess my teaching abilities through surveys completed by my students as well as evaluations by my advisor and/or peers.
