Leadership

The Leadership competency area addresses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a leader, whether it be a positional leader or a member of the staff, in both an individual capacity and within a process of how individuals work together effectively to envision, plan, effect change in organizations, and respond to internal and external constituencies and issues.

During my time as an undergraduate and now as a graduate student I have participated in BGSU Dance Marathon, an organization that raises money for Mercy Children’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio.  My senior year (2009-2010) at Bowling Green State University I served a on the Morale Core Committee as the Silver Morale Captain.  In this role I was responsible for spreading enthusiasm at the event, while keeping students motivated and excited to raise money for our Children’s Miracle Network hospital Mercy Children’s throughout the year.  In this role I was a part of a team of 18 other leaders from across campus who all had varying leadership styles.  Upon doing StrtengthsQuest (Achiever, Futuristic, Includer, Competition, Ideation).  I used my includer and ideation strengths  to inspire ideas, and ensure that all people were heard during our weekly meetings.  Through this role I am now able to identify my “strengths and weaknesses as a leader” as well as seek opportunities that will help me grow (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 22).  To help me improve my leadership skills during the College Student Personnel program I sought out the opportunity to serve as a graduate advisor for the Community Outreach Core Committee  As the graduate advisor I had to “think critically and creatively, and imagine possibilities for solutions that do not currently exist” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 22).  The committee I was a part of helped increase the money raised for the annual Benefit Dinner (money raised comparison), while increase awareness of Dance Marathon in elementary schools so as to program with them in the 2013-2014 school year.  As the advisor for this group, I served as a mentor for some of the students who were a part of this group displayed “authenticity and congruence” between my true self and my positional roles (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 23)

My experiences working at Subway since May 2010 have also aided in my leadership skills.  In my year off school 2010-2011, I worked as the assistant manager to help with inventory, food orders, and bank deposits.  I am now the employee who has been there the longest and serve as a mentor and as a person who people feel comfortable coming to with any questions or concerns.  This position has helped me to “identify basic fundamentals of teamwork and teambuilding” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 22) with the Subway crew.  When we have new employees, I serve as a mentor and a person of contact (ACPA & NASPA, 2010)
