About ME

Who Am I?

Education

My name is Claire Marie Hoover.  I would have been been named Emily if I had looked like my mom when I was born... but I was bald with a dimple on my chin (a twin of my father) and I've been "Claire" ever since.  I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and consider myself a city-girl at heart.  In high school I was an avid violinist and continued that passion all four years at Bowling Green State University; participating in the BGSU Philharomnia and studying under the talent of Vaslie Beluska. I am the daughter of two nurses both of which instilled a devotion to life-long learning.

I passion for animals, specifically cats, and I have five at home (Binkie, Thomas, Bartok, Maisie, and Gatsby).  I believe that if you can get a cat to love you, you know you've done something good with your life.  I have a mild (extreme) obsession with Diet Dr. Pepper and had my senior pictures taken with a can (things haven't changed much).  In my free time I play video games with my husband-to-be and I've found that playing games helps me to be more efficient in my daily life.  Michael Jackson holds a special place in my heart because of the fond memories I have listening to his music with my father

"The key question to keep asking is, Are you spending your time on the right things? Because time is all you have."-Randy Pausch

Everything I do comes from the drive to fully live and help others live, not the fight to justify myself or my actions.
I want to live a life where I know I spent my time doing what I enjoy while helping others find the joy in their lives.

I am an alumnus of Bowling Green State University (10") where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Philosophy.  As a Psychology major I served as a Research Assistant for various studies throughout the area of Psychology by helping to collect, code, and analyze data for faculty and graduate students.  As a Psychology major I gained skills in predicting and understanding behavior of others as well as managing difficult situations in high stress environments   As a Psychology major I also have extensive experience with evaluating claims and behavior as well as quantitative research.  My minor in Philosophy enhanced my ability to think logically, critically, and independently   I also gained the ability to reason with abstract concepts and how to apply abstract constructs to particular cases.

The awareness, knowledge, and skills I gained from Psychology and Philosophy gave me a seamless transition to area of student affairs.  My ultimate goal is to obtain my PhD, teach, and continue to learn in and outside of the classroom.  I believe that education is a lifelong endeavor, and through staying in a university setting, I can continue to reach my full potential as a scholar, while spreading my enthusiasm for education to students. My passion is education and working with students.  Student affairs meshes both aspects together and has given me the tools needed to succeed in higher education.

My first year at Bowling Green State University I was a part of the Arts Village Learning Community.  This experience helped me learn the power of creating a welcoming community and environment early on in my educational career. The experiences I had as a member of a strong community and role modeling by my Resident Advisor led me to my decision to be a Resident Advisor my sophomore year.

My first year as a Resident Advisor I served as the female Resident Advisor for the Arts Village Learning Community and helped aid educational programming efforts through a psychologcal programming series.  Programs included showing movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Finding Nemo and discussing mental health and use of the counseling Center.  My first two years I served on the Battle of the Buildings Committee to engage residents in community-building competitions as well as the Dance Marathong Representative to help promote engagemant within the Residence Hall.

The summer before my senior year I had the opportunity to represent BGSU as an Orientation Leader and aided first-year students in their transition to college-life.  As an Orientation leader I served as a role model and resource for over 100 students.

My senior year I was the Administrative Resident Advisor for Harshman-Chapman Dunbar and helped with hiring, supervising, and scheduling an RA staff and and Desk Clerks.

Upon graduation I worked at Subway Sandwiches and was promoted to Assistant Manager duties.  Working in food services has helped me to truley understand the meaning of customer service, and finding ways to work with and serve a range of people with different attitudes and way of treating others.

Upon admission to the CSP program I have worked a an Academic Advisor at Owens Copmmunity College for two years.  As an Academic Advisor, I help Arts and Science and Exploratory students decide on their majors, create academic plans, and build rapport with students to ensure academic success.  The summer before my second year I worked at BGSU's Student Orienation and Registration and helped first-year students in the University Program for Academic Success plan out their first semester of classes.
