History, Philosophy, and Values
The History, Philosophy, and Values competency area involves knowledge, skills, and attitudes that connect the history, philosophy, and values of the profession to one’s current professional practice. This competency area embodies the foundations of the profession from which current and future research and practice will grow. The commitment to demonstrating this competency area ensures that our present and future practices are informed by an understanding of our history, philosophy, and values.

Coursework
In CSP 6010: Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel, we reviewed various documents such as The student Learning Imperative, the Student Personnel Point of View, and Learning Reconsidered to help us gain an understanding of the “foundational philosophies, disciplines, and values on which the profession is built” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 14). This course also helped me to “articulate the historical contexts of institutional types and functional areas within higher education and student affairs” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 14). This knowledge and skill is demonstrated through my handout (link) about the functional area of student conduct that I presented to my class to inform them about issues in student conduct. In this course we also described the roles of faculty and students affairs professionals in the academy (ACPA & NASPA, 2010). I learned this through an interview with a faculty member and my reflection of this interview (provide paper).
In CSP 6040: Educational Outcomes of American Colleges and Universities we explored the purpose and values of higher education. In my intended outcomes of higher education paper, I articulated the “various philosophies that define the profession” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 14). Throughout the semester we also explored the impact that college has on various individuals. I demonstrate my knowledge in this area though my Impact of College Paper in which I explain the “public role and societal benefits of student affairs on higher education generally” (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 14), as well as the impact on students with disabilities, a minority group in higher education. To culminate the knowledge we obtained in this course we created our own institution, in which I created my own learning outcomes, and programs to impact the population I researched my impact of college paper.
