Student Conduct

As a resident advisor, I gained knowledge of the beginning of the student conduct process through writing incident reports for student conduct violations.  However, I have little knowledge of what happens beyond the documentation of violations.  During my first semester in the College Student Personnel program, I did a project focused on the area of student conduct and interviewed the director of student conduct at Owens Community College.  The director of student conduct not only handles student conduct, but also acts as the liaison between students and mental health counselors in the outside community.  If I plan to work in an institution of higher education as a mental health counselor and graduate hall director, it is important for me to have knowledge of student conduct procedures.  Moreover, depending on the institution I work for, my work as a mental health counselor might overlap substantially with student conduct (i.e. working with students who have been brought through the disciplinary process).

Student Conduct: Development Plan

To improve my knowledge of student conduct, during my first year I will read articles related to restorative justice by the author Pete Meagher as well as become familiar with the student handbook at the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College, as well as other colleges in the area.  Lastly, I will interview the director of student conduct at the University of Toledo.  To continue to improve my knowledge, during my second year I will find opportunities to serve on the conduct review board at The University of Toledo, as well as evaluate, and find ways to improve the student code of conduct.  Lastly, I will subscribe to weekly publications such as the Law and Policy Report and the Pavela Report.  During  my third year, to continue enhancing my knowledge in student conduct, I will become a member of the Association for Student Conduct Administration as well as finding opportunities to present and integrate student conduct topics in my class (through my assistantship) or to my peers.
