Residence Life
Although I worked as a resident advisor for three years as an undergraduate, I still do not have enough knowledge of residence life for me to feel comfortable working in this functional area. Because I hope to work as a graduate hall director for my graduate assistantship, I want to ensure that I am doing all I can to increase my knowledge of residence life and the current issues and trends. As a counselor or faculty member, I plan to work at an institution of higher education. If this is the case, depending on the institution, many of the students with whom I will work, will live in the residence halls. I believe that having a better understanding of policies and procedures, as well as the changing trends in residence life, will help me to be a more conscientious counselor and/or faculty member.
Residence Life: Development Plan
To improve my knowledge of residence life, during my first year I plan on applying and (hopefully) receiving a graduate hall director assistantship at the University of Toledo. I believe that experiencing and gaining skills by being a part of residence life will also help me gain knowledge of this functional area. To continue my growth, I also plan to subscribe to the Chronicle of Higher Education alerts regarding residence life and other key terms such as gender neutral housing. I also plan to read Roger Winston’s (1993) Student Housing and Residential Life: A Handbook for Professionals Committed to Student Development. Lastly, I plan to start attending webinars sponsored by ACUHO-I. To continue to expand my knowledge of residence life, during my second year I plan to attend an ACUHO-I or GLACUHO conference as well as seek ways to gain more supervisory experience with my residence life staff by speaking with my hall director about ways to gain more broad experiences. Lastly I hope to work on staff development by facilitating a leadership retreat using aspects of the Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner (2002) to help me gain experience in leadership and staff development; two aspects I believe to be important in gaining knowledge in the area of residence life. To expand my knowledge of residence life even further, during my third year I plan to present at either the ACUHO-I or GLACUHO conference. Presenting will mean that I have combined knowledge from my readings and experiences and gained enough knowledge to present on this functional area.
